The government of Burundi has given unmarried but cohabiting couple till the end of the year to legalize their marriage as a way of checkmating and reforming morals in the country.
The Burundi government in its latest move has ordered all unmarried couples to legalize their relationships before the end of the year. The order was given on Friday after the government lauunched a campaign headed by the President, Pierre Nkurunziza to moralise society.
Terence Ntahiraja, the Burundi’s Interior ministry spokesman said the country was facing a population explosion which could be blamed on “illegal marriages,” polygamy, bigamy and “hundreds of schoolgirls getting pregnant.”
The spokesman further noted that the solution to the exploding population in the country is through church and state-sanctioned weddings.
Nkurunziza added that Burundians should show their love for each other — and their country — by getting married.
