Gov. Ambode says LASG will continue to promote sports for economic development

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has said that his administration would continue to promote sports development as a veritable tool to drive the economy due to its mass appeal.

Ambode made the assertion on Sunday after he watched the derby between the Lagos-based clubs, MFM FC and Ikorodu United at Agege Stadium.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Ambode watched the game with some members of the state executive council and the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.

The sports-loving governor, who came to cheer the clubs, promised that the government would continue to create enabling environment for the growth of sports.

“I have no doubt that sports can partner the economy for a better development of the country.

“If you look around and see the number of people that watched the match, you will know what I am talking about.

“We are creating an enabling environment to develop all sports in the state and not only football,’’ he said.

Speaking, the Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission, Deji Tinubu, noted that government had done all it could to ensured the development of football in the state.

“The government has done enough to create a level playing ground for all to operate, if we all can key into its programmes, it will be of great benefit.

“We will not discourage anyone, even the football clubs based in the state have received a lot of encouragement from us which is key to their survival,’’ he said.

NAN reports that MFM defeated their local rivals 3-1 in the Match Day 24 fixture.

NAN also reports that goals from Sikiru Olatunbosun in the 12th minute, Stephen Odey in the 69th and last gap penalty from Ifeanyi Ifeanyi ensured the needed three points for the Olukoya boys.

Ikorodu United, however, had its consolation goal through a spot kick converted by Fatai Abdulahi in the 19th minute. (NAN)
