Gospel Singer Sinach Faces N5 Billion Lawsuit Over ‘Way Maker’ Copyright Infringement

1 Min Read

Popular gospel musician, Sinach, has been sued by music producer Michael Oluwole, also known as Maye, over alleged copyright infringement for her 2016 hit song ‘Way Maker’. The lawsuit, filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos, seeks N5 billion in damages and a declaration that Maye is a co-owner of the song.

According to Maye, he contributed to the song’s production, recording, mixing, and mastering, and created instrumental accompaniments without a formal agreement transferring his performer’s rights. He alleges that Sinach released the song without his consent or compensation and failed to share revenue from licenses and copyright agreements.

Sinach, however, denies Maye’s claims, asserting that she is the sole author of the song and had achieved global recognition before its release. She claims that Maye’s role was limited to mixing the track, for which he was paid $300, and denies any obligation to formalize an agreement with him.

The trial, which began on November 27, 2024, has been adjourned until January 29 and 30, 2025.
