The defection of former Akwa-Ibom state Governor, Godswill Akpabio, from the PDP to APC has been confirmed and is now widely expected to go through.
The rumour was confirmed by President Muhammadu Buhari’s Special Assistant on Prosecution, Okoi Obono-Obla who went on his Facebook page to clarify that the move would go through on Thursday when he will be received by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo and other top leaders of the party at a rally in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom state.
There had long been speculation that Akpabio will make the jump from PDP to APC with whispers stating that the former governor was making the move partly because of his well-documented feud with Emmanuel Udom.
Some reports also indicate that Akpabio is being threatened by the APC to either deliver Akwa-Ibom to them, or face prosecution from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
According to Premium Times, Obono-Obla confirmed the defection saying: “Senator Akpabio is defecting to the APC, you can take that to the bank”.
When questioned about Akpabio’s ambitions to be Senate President if he joins the APC, Obono-Obla responded saying: “I cannot confirm that.
“But if he wants the position of a senate president, he is eminently qualified for it”.
Buhari’s aide also stated that there was no worry that the PDP were using the former Governor as a mole to spy on the APC.
“I don’t subscribe to that position.
“He is a very ebullient leader. He is very charismatic. I believe his coming to the APC will change the fortunes of the APC in Akwa Ibom in particular, and the South-South in general,” he said.
