Former presidential spokesman, Dr. Doyin Okupe says his son, Bolu, should not be treated as a criminal for coming out as gay.
He stated this in a Facebook post on Saturday, his second reaction on the matter.
The Herald first reported Okupe’s initial response to his son’s revelation about his sexuality.
He had described Bolu’s gay status as a “spiritual challenge” that was at variance with his own personal religious convictions.
But in the latest response, he appealed to Nigerians not to see his son as a criminal because he is gay.
Homosexuality is punishable by up to 14 years in prison in Nigeria.
However, Okupe revealed that his son lives in France, where homosexuality is not a crime.

He added that Bolu has five other brothers that are not gay and are doing well for themselves.
One of them, he said, is Roye Okoye, a filmmaker that was in 2017 listed among 100 Most Influential Africans of the Year.
He said, “This is also my son Dewunmi Okupe, one of Bolu Okupe’s 5 other brothers.
“I love all the children God has given me, Bolu inclusive.
“I pray for them to excel in their fields of endeavors.
“Bolu will still be celebrated on this wall, in Nigeria and globally, in the name of Jesus.
“I believe the Scriptures and the Holy Bible assures me in Isaiah 3 vs 10: TELL THE RIGHTEOUS, IT SHALL BE WELL WITH HIM.
“All my children shall be for great signs and wonders in Jesus Name.
“Bolu is not a criminal. He lives in France where Homosexuality is not a crime.
“His present mind set and sexual orientation does not conform to Christian Doctrine which I hold to with my life. But I am certain that with the boldness he has made his declaration, he will still use same attribute to serve God and boldly declare His Glory in Christ Jesus.
“Mark my words.”
