Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje

Judge Suleiman Na-mallam of the Kano State High Court has awarded N800,000 against Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje in the case he instituted against an online newspaper, Daily Nigerian, and its publisher, Ja’afar Ja’afar over some controversial bribery videos.

In the videos published in 2018 by Daily Nigerian, a figure that appeared to be Ganduje can be seen collecting wads of dollars from some persons.

Daily Nigerian explained that the videos showed the governor collecting bribes from contractors in the state.

Reacting at the time, Ganduje said the videos were the handiwork of mischief makers out to tarnish his image.

He subsequently sued the online medium and Ja’afar, demanding N3 billion in damages.

However, he recently applied to the court to have the case discontinued.

At a hearing on Tuesday, the counsel to the defendants did not object to the application for discontinuance of the case but made some demands on behalf of their clients.

Some of the demands were that the plaintiff coughed out N400,000 as compensation, a pre-action letter and an apology in some national dailies for seeking discontinuation of the suit.

Judge Suleiman Na-mallam however awarded N400,000 each to Daily Nigerian and Ja’afar.

The judge made no mention of the demand for apology in national dailies.
