In the exercise of its constitutional powers, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has deregistered not less than 74 political parties in Nigeria, which failed to meet the established criteria.
This was disclosed in an announcement which was made during a press conference by INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, in Abuja.
According to him, only 18, out of a total number of 92 political parties, scaled through the assessment which was carried out by INEC in line with section 225a of the Constitution Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
Yakubu said:
“breach of any of the requirements for registration as a party, failure to win at least 25 percent of the votes cast in one state in a presidential election or 25 percent of the votes cast in one local government area, and failure to win at least one ward in a Chairmanship election, one seat in the national or state assembly election or one seat in a councilorship election”.
