Twenty-four of the 36 states of the federation have so far passed the bill seeking to reduce the minimum age for elective posts in the country otherwise known as ‘Not Too Young To Run’ bill.
The bill is part of the sought amendment to the 1999 constitution and was passed by both chambers of the National Assembly in July 2017.
States that have so far passed the bill are: Plateau, Anambra, Ondo, Adamawa, Kwara, Benue, Nasarawa, Borno, Delta, Enugu, Ekiti, Katsina, Yobe and Gombe.
Others that have passed the bill are: Bauchi, Jigawa, Ebonyi, Kebbi, Akwa Ibom, Kaduna, Niger, Kogi, Ogun and Abia.
The Taraba state house of assembly however refused to pass the bill.
Some other states that have not passed the bill yet are: Lagos, Oyo, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kano, Edo, Bayelsa, Osun, Cross River, Imo and Rivers.
The bill seeks to reduce the minimum age to contest for: presidency from 40 to 35; governorship from 35 to 30; senate from 35 to 30; House of Representatives from 30 to 25; and state houses of assembly from 30 to 25.
