The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said on Wednesday that it has established a unit in Doka, on Abuja-Kaduna expressway to curb road crashes and save lives.
The Kaduna State Sector Commander, Mr Francis Udoma told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna that competent personnel and logistics had been deployed for effective operation.
He said that the unit was mandated to bring the spate of road crashes on the highway under control.
NAN recalls that late Minister of State for Labour, Mr James Ocholi and six medical doctors from Ekiti State recently lost their lives in that area, a development the FRSC attributed to over-speeding.
In a related development, the command has held a rally to enlighten the public on road safety consciousness.
Udoma said that the rally was part of activities to mark the 2016 West Africa Road Safety Organization (WARSO), which had as its theme `If we don’t Kill Over-speed, Over-Speed Will Kill Us.’
“It is a known fact that the recent crashes witnessed on Kaduna-Abuja expressway were obviously as a result of over-speeding and tyre busts.
“This could have been averted if the drivers were moving at the recommended speed limit of 100 km/hour for cars and 90 km/hour for buses on expressway.
“Therefore, the public are enjoined to observe and maintain the recommended speed limit for various vehicles, “he said.(NAN)
