The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Friday commenced a four-day special patrol along Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, Ibadan-Lagos and Benin-Asaba Expressways to ensure zero accident along them.
The Corps Marshal, Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, speaking at the commencement of the patrol on Friday, said the step became necessary following the spate of accidents usually recorded along these expressways on weekly basis.
Oyeyemi said the operation, which would run from June 24 to 27, would focus more on speed, worn-out tyres, overloading, lane violation and other traffic offences.
The Corps Marshal represented by the Assistant Corps Marshal in charge of Federal Operations, FRSC Headquarters, Mrs Mary Wakawa, said the operation would run simultaneously in other flashpoint highways in the country.
“The three corridors on the spotlight of the operation are mapped out because they record the highest accident rates in the country.
“We are concentrating our attentions and resources on Abuja-Kaduna expressway and the other highways because of the high rate of accidents being recorded on weekly basis.
“The target is to employ preventive mechanism by ensuring zero accident on the roads throughout the operation period and beyond,” he said.
Oyeyemi said that FRSC’s mandate was to ensure zero road crashes on Nigerian roads but we have continued to witness accidents on our roads.
“That is why all the flashpoint areas were mapped out for this exercise, because we have to live up to our expectations, particularly, with the recent logistics support from the Federal Government.
“We will achieve our mandated when over speeding is reduced, overloading is reduced, motorists desist from using expired and worn-out tyres and obey all traffic rules and regulations,’’ he said.
Also speaking, the Zone 1 Commander, Mr Bulus Darwang, announced the suspension of all other operations currently running in the zone.
He ordered the collapse of all resources to ensure the success of the four-day accident free operation.
The FRSC Zone 1 had on Monday begun a seven-day special patrol to check road traffic accidents during the raining season. (NAN)
