Fresh Herdsmen Attack Leave 25 Dead In Kogi

Suspected Fulani herdsmen have attacked three communities in Kogi State, killing 25 people.

The affected areas were Abejukolo in Omala LGA, Oganienugwu and Ikende communities in Dekina Local Government Area, all being in the Eastern Senatorial district of the state.

During the filing of this report, residents were purportedly moving out of Obakume, Idirisu, and Oji Apata to escape possible attacks.

The attack commenced Tuesday and continued till Thursday.

A detachment of police and soldiers were deployed to calm the violence.

Eye witness account stated that the assailants would tie the victims up before slaughtering them, those who attempted to escape reportedly were cut with machetes.

Villagers say the sound of gunfire and clamouring thugs in army uniform awoke them.

The gunmen were armed with AK-47 rifles had attacked the villagers in their farms before returning in the night around 1am while villagers slept.

Several houses were razed and destroyed in the sustained attacks which left no fewer than 25 dead.

Mr. Monday Bala, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in the state, who verified the incident, said the command had not yet worked out the real number of casualties.

“The command has drafted men of the command alongside men of the armed forces to deal with the situation,” he added, that his troops were in total control of the situation.
