Men of the Nigerian Police Force on Friday arrested a politician, Mr Deji Adeyanju at a sit-out demanding the release of detained leader of the shi’a group, Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky).
According to reports, the daily sit-out which holds at the Unity Fountain, Abuja was on its 94th day when the police swooped on the protesters, arrested Adeyanju and tear-gassed Shiites who had gathered for the sit-out.
Recall that Zakzaky was arrested by the Nigerian Army in December 2015 after IMN had an altercation with the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai.
Soldiers swooped on the IMN leader’s compound in Zaria and allegedly killed many of the group’s members, including some of Zakzaky’s family members, before arresting the injured Zakzaky.
Despite a court order that Zakzaky should be released and compensated, the authorities have continued to hold him amidst rumours of failing health.
