Chelsea were dominant in the first half but were unable to find the breakthrough. In the half, the Blues managed 17 shots while the visitors had no shots at all.
All that effort would pay off barely five minutes into the second half when Adam Webster’s poor decision inside the box gave Chelsea a chance from the spot which Jorginho obliged by coolly dispatching his shot into the net.
Brighton had a short spell during which they could have scored but the woodwork denied them. The spell was undone when Willian got on the end of Callum Hudson Odoi’s pass and the Brazilian converted from the near post to make it 2 to the home side.
It was the first home in of the season for the Blues and a much awaited one for club legend and new boss, Frank Lampard.
Lampard’s Chelsea will next travel away to Southampton as they set their sights on the business end of the table but for now, Lille FC is up next in the Champions League.
