Four ATMs belonging to a new generation bank went up in flames today June 15, 2019, in Calabar, Cross River State.
The frightening incidence is said to have occurred at an ATM gallery in front of the University of Calabar campus gate around 9 am.
Many had to scamper for safety after the loud bang of the explosion rented the air.
Although some persons were at the gallery when the explosion occurred, no casualty was recorded.
An eyewitness, Mathew Ilem who spoke with newsmen from Vanguard revealed that some bank staff had loaded the machines with cash, minutes before the explosion occurred.
He explained, “It was not up to 20 minutes when the bank officials loaded the machines with cash before the fire started from inside and the machines started exploding.
“I had to call police and fire service who responded on time and they are trying to put out the fire, the cause is not sure but it seems it’s an electrical fault.
Firefighters and police officers have since arrived the scene to put out the fire and calm the tension that arose after the explosion.
The affected bank is yet to make any official statement concerning the incident.
