Brazilian football legend, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, popularly known as Pelé, is dead.
Pelé died aged 82 at the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital in Sao Paulo, where he had been hospitalised since November 29.
Born in Tres Coracoes, Brazil, on October 23, 1940, Pelé was a three-time World Cup winner.
Regarded as one of football’s greatest players, he scored more than 1,000 goals in his illustrious career.
He had been battling colon cancer since September 2021 but recently needed care for cardiac and renal-related ailments, the hospital said.
His daughter, Kely Nascimento took to Instagram to mourn his death.
“We are thankful to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace,” she wrote.
