A folkore singer, Akeem Lasisi, has urged Nigerian musicians to promote the nation’s cultural values through their creative works.
Lasisi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos that musicians should always endeavour to project Nigeria’s cultural values to the world.
“The country has almost lost its cultural values, but I think that all hopes are not lost. We can start now to reform it.
“Our music and culture have been polluted by external influences, as the youths borrow their styles, rhythm and lyrics from other places, thereby contributing to the erosion of our values,’’ Lasisi said.
According to him, what the present-day Nigeria musicians churn out is no music at all and is meaningless.
“Nigerian Music in the past had meanings and was meant to discourage vices and promote good deeds in the society and among the citizenry.
“But now, it’s all about noise, how they made money, women, nudity and others, it is alien to our culture.
“Sometimes they have to challenge leaders and government policies that were anti-people, and sometimes they praised individuals who had contributed to nation building.
“Our present-day musicians should emulate the musicians of old, who were good and have been there for quite some time by composing good songs,” he advised.
Lasisi said that musicians must strive to sing and inspire people to always do well, and enhance Godly-living in the society.
He admonished them to be of good character and to impact positively on their followers and the society, mentally, morally and spiritually.
“By so doing, the society will be at peace and the people will live together in peace and harmony as one entity and one nation,’’ Lasisi added. (NAN)
