Defending Champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. stays unbeaten with a unanimous-decision victory over Marcos Maidana in another hard-hitting and strategic fight for the world welterweight title early this morning at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Mayweather (47-0, 26 knockouts) was still his masterful self, the 37 year old simply outwitted Maidana with skill, quickness and experience.
Maidana (35-5, 31 Knockouts) tried to take the fight to the Champion, who skilfully avoided the big right hand that the challenger continually tried to land.
In the eighth round, there was a spot of controversy where Mayweather claimed to have been bit by Maidana during a clench. After the fight, Mayweather said:
”We were tangled in the center of the ring and I didn’t realize what it was. Then I saw that he bit me,” Mayweather said. ”After the eighth round my fingers were numb, I couldn’t use my left hand.”
Maidana denied the act saying:
”How can he say I bit the glove with my mouthpiece?” Maidana asked. ”I’m not a dog.”
Maidana also had a point deducted in the tenth round for tripping the Champion.
Two judges, Dave Moretti and Jihn Mckaie, scored it 116-111 and the other, Guido Cavallerie, had it 115-112.
”I felt sharper in the first fight, my rhythm was off,” Mayweather said. ”I got hit with some shots tonight I shouldn’t have gotten hit with. But that comes with the sport.”
The boxer earned at $32 million for the rematch, bringing his total earnings to over $100 million in the last year.
