A Lagos lawmaker, Mr Saka Fafunmi, says measures are in place to ensure that residents of Lagos are safe from flooding during the raining season.
Fafunmi, Chairman, House Committee on the Environment, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday that machinery was in place to ensure that the drains were not blocked.
He said that the major cause of flooding during the season was the collection of waste materials in drains which affected free flow of water.
Fafunmi also said that one of the problems the state had encountered over time in the raining season was non-availability of equipment to forecast the amount of expected rainfall.
“We only hope that our preparations will be sufficient enough to meet the demands of the rains when it comes.
“But, as you can see lately, we have the Environmental Flood Abatement Department (EFAD) sections that take care of all the waste in the drainage alignment.
“We also have other things which we are working on to ensure there is free flow of water.
“We want to assure that with the adequate preparations we have put on ground, lives of residents and their property are secured,’’ he said. (NAN)
