The five-hour early morning rainfall in Birnin Kebbi town on Tuesday resulted in flooding and collapse of several houses.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that major streets and some houses were submerged by the flood leading to destruction of property worth millions of Naira.
NAN reports that there was no injuries or deaths recorded as a result of the flood, but many families were rendered homeless.
The flooded areas included Badariya, Bayan kara, Aliero quarters, Kalgo road in Birnin Kebbi.
Gov. Atiku Bagudu, who inspected the affected areas in the rain, had directed the State’s Commissioner for Lands, Alhaji Abubakar Ladan, to compile names of victims with a pledge to compensate them.
The governor called on the people to desist from building structures on water ways, and to avoid indiscriminate disposal of refuse on the drains.
A cross-section of residents, who embarked on evacuation of their property from the submerged houses, complained that non completion of drains was responsible for the flooding.
