Flood arising from a heavy rainfall which started in the early hours of yesterday in Asaba and its environs has allegedly swept three persons into a gutter along the deplorable Okpanam road.
Reports said the victims, aged 10, 12 and 13 years, were trapped inside the heavy flood which swept through the entire road from the state House of Assembly complex down to Marble Hills along Okpanam road.
It was reliably gathered that the victims had struggled to get out of the flooded drainage system to no avail before help came their way.
Eyewitnesses said the flood was heavy on the road where several motorists were also trapped, adding that in the victims’ attempts to escape the tragedy, they eventually got out of the gutter but fell into a pothole on the road where they struggled for help to no avail.
Police officers at the scene of the incident said that the death of the victims was unfortunate, blaming it on the deplorable situation of the road.
They said that the victims were rushed to a nearby clinic but were confirmed dead before medication was administered to them.
Investigations revealed that Asaba and its environs were virtually submerged in the flood following the rainfall which had not stopped at the time of filing this report.
But the younger sister of one of the victims, who simply identified herself as Victoria said: “Mummy said Frank should not enter the rain, yet he entered”.
Residents, who besieged the scene of the incident, wore heavy hearts with profuse tears running down their eyes as they called on the state government to as a matter of urgency look into the deplorable condition of the road into a view to finding lasting solution.
