Five members of a family have been reportedly killed in a fire that gutted their home in the early hours of Wednesday, eyewitnesses say.

The fire which ravaged an apartment at 23 Michael Ogun Street, Obele, Lawanson area of Lagos, left a man, his wife, a grandmother, a young girl and an infant dead.

The fire was said to have started around 12 am when residents tried to put it out without being aware that the family was caught inside it.

The man who was taken to Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba was suspected to have died as a result of suffocation before the fire got hold of him.

However, emergency rescue bodies say that a 6-year-old boy, who may have been a member of the family, survived the incident.

The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited in the mortuary pending the determination of their cause of death.

The immediate cause of the inferno could not be ascertained as at the time of going to press.

It will be recalled that just a few days ago, a 16-year-old was reportedly burnt to death in Lekki; while a complex in Balogun Market was equally razed to the ground with scores of lives lost and property running into millions destroyed.
