Thousands of people marched across Morocco on Sunday following a tragic death of a fish vendor in the northern city of Hoceima.
Mouhcine Fikri, 31, was crushed on Friday night by a compactor after he jumped into a garbage truck to retrieve his merchandise, according to local media.
The reports said Fikri and some of his friends dived into the garbage truck after local authorities confiscated his 11,000 U.S. dollars swordfish, a protected species in Morocco.
As the compactor started operating, his friends jumped out, but Fikri got stuck inside.
Apart from the vendor’s city of Hoceima, protesters marched in cities including Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakesh, Agadir and Tangier.
The Moroccan interior ministry visited on Sunday Hoceima to offer condolences to the family of Fikri.
The minister informed Fikri’s family that King Mohammed VI gave instructions for conducting a thorough investigation and bringing charges against whoever held responsible in this incident. (Xinhua/NAN)
