The National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has called on the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to remove the contentious fuel subsidy as a matter of urgency.
He said this at the 10th year anniversary seminar for revered late historian, Dr. Bala Usman in Kaduna on Friday.
At the event where he was a guest speaker, Tinubu said that fuel subsidy was the major cause of the incessant fuel scarcity in the country, hence the need to do away with it.
This comes against the backdrop of an announcement by the Federal Government through the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, that the government will not be removing fuel subsidy but would seek other alternatives to finance the oil industry.
However, the former Governor of Lagos State stated that the contentious fuel subsidy favoured only the privileged few, why the poor daily languish in need and could hardly make ends meet.
According to him, the gargantuan amount being spent on keeping the subsidy regime could be better utilised in resuscitating our ailing refineries, revamping our comatose rail system and provide other useful amenities for both the privileged and the down-trodden.
