The Honourable Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina has said the Federal Government is nurturing no plans to ban ponmo.
His tweet:
The local dish is viewed as both a delicacy and affordable source of dietary needs to many Nigerians.
However scientists believe there is little to no nutritional benefit in the cow hide that is used to make leather that provides for the $1.3 trillion dollar global fashion industry.
Adesina, easily the best performing minister in the Jonathan administration, is calling for Nigerians to have a reorientation. Forfeitting the tens of billions of Naira we consume in ponmo per annum, we can earn more National Income to develop our economy.
In agreement with the FG’s stance, Lekan Bakare, an economist says, “We eat leather because it is to hot to wear leather here.
“But the weather in many other parts of the world is cold. They wear leather there. We can as well sell to them.”
