FG adopting double standards on almajiri relocation – Wike

2 Min Read

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has accused the Federal Government of adopting double standards on almajiri relocation in the country.

He stated this during an address at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

According to the governor, the Buhari administration looked the other way when Northern governors sent non-indigene almajiri packing from their states but frowned when his government attempted the same to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Addressing traditional rulers in the state, Wike said his lockdown of Port Harcourt and Obio-Akpor local government areas was a necessary measure to contain the spread of COVID-19.

“When they started relocating the almajiri in the North, the Federal Government said nothing. Immediately they heard that we have relocated some almajiri, they came up with the declaration that it is against the inter-state movement. Why this double standard?” Wike queried.

He said his government would deal severely with anyone that violates its directives on the use of face masks and market closure.

“As the hotels remain closed, those coming in will have nowhere to stay. When we are safe, we can enjoy what we can. I am not doing this because I hate anyone, but it is for the protection of our people.

“No human being will see death and embrace it. We cannot kill ourselves. The only solution is to ensure social distancing and proper hygiene,” the governor said.
