Residents of Rumuolumeni, Obio/Apkor Local Government Area of Rivers have expressed apprehension over possible breakdown of law and order following the alleged murder of a youth leader, Orowhuo Ishi.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ishi, who was the Chairman, Minikpiti Community Youth Association, was allegedly killed about 8.00pm on Thursday.
Community sources told NAN that the murder might not be unconnected with the fierce struggle to control revenue collection from a motor park in the area.
The sources, which preferred anonymity, said that Ishi had received threat messages from members of a cult group over his stand on the issue.
According to the sources, the murder has thrown the community into fear of possible attack and breakdown of law and order.
NAN reports that the late Ishi’s parents’ home was besieged by mourners since news of the incident broke.
“He was at home, then suddenly rushed out after receiving a call and the next thing we heard were gunshots. It was such a surprise to all of us,’’ a family source said.
A police source at the Rumuolumeni Police Station said that Ishi’s corpse had been deposited at the morgue.
The source said that investigation was already ongoing to unearth and bring the killers of the youth leader to book. (NAN)
