FCTA demolishes Fulani settlement

The abandoned broadcast facilities of the Abuja Broadcasting Corporation Ltd. may be converted to a training centre for journalists if the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), approves the former’s recommendation.

The corporation’s Managing Director, Malam Ibrahim Damisa, made the declaration on Wednesday in Abuja during a tour of the company’s headquarters by newsmen.

Damisa explained that management of the corporation had recommended to the FCTA, the need to convert the station’s abandoned facility to a centre where media practitioners’ capacity could be built through regular training.

The managing director, who frowned at the damaging effects of fake news on the image of the country, urged media practitioners to adhere strictly to the ethics of the profession.

“We are looking at how we can use our facilities at Abaji to train journalists. If our recommendations are accepted, we shall proceed to establish a training school there,’’ he said.

Damisa also called on policymakers to always recognise media practitioners as well as carry them along in policy implementation.

He said the implementation of many of government’s policies could fail if the media was not properly incorporated into the processes to take the details of the policies to the people.

He observed that the negative reactions that followed the September increase in the pump price of petrol and that of electricity tariff could have been avoided if the media was properly engaged to sensitise the people ahead of implementation.
