Outgoing FIFA helmsman, Sepp Blatter is under investigation from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) who unexpectedly announced he was quitting his post just days after being re-elected.
Blatter announced his decision six days after the FBI arrested FIFA officials as part of a corruption probe. Blatter had been re-elected to a fifth term as president before he decided to quit.
A source was quoted as saying to ABC: “Now that people are going to want to save themselves, there’s probably a race to see who will flip on [Blatter] first.”
He was re-elected after his only rival, Jordan’s Prince Ali bin Al Hussein withdrew after losing heavily in the first round of voting.
However, in a hastily arranged press conference on Tuesday he announced his resignation. “FIFA needs profound restructuring,” said Blatter, a Swiss national who has been a dominating presence at FIFA for decades.
“I have thoroughly considered my presidency and thought about my presidency and the last 40 years of my life,” Blatter, speaking in French, told the news conference.
“I decided to stand again to be elected because I was convinced it was the best option for football. “Although the members of FIFA gave me a new mandate, this mandate does not seem to be supported by everyone in the world.”
