The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has slammed reports calling for him to commit suicide after a comment promising to commit suicide should the nation’s president, Muhammadu Buhari return from UK where he was for over 100 days on an extended medical vacation, was credited to him.
Fayose in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, denied the comments credited to him adding that he never said such thing.
Coming after the Nigerian president returned to Nigeria from the UK on Saturday, people from several quarters had called on the Ekiti State Governor to fulfil his promise.
In reaction, Fayose stated that the statement was a “creation of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the state.”
He added: “Mr. Fayose never said he would commit suicide if the President returns to the country.”
The statement further noted that: “It is the creation of the APC. It is their style to create such falsehood.”
Idowu Adelusi in the statement further maintained that instead of the false comment, the state governor had wished the Nigerian president well and had joined other Nigerians in praying for his safe return.
Recall that the APC in Ekiti while celebrating the return of the president had reminded Fayose of the promise adding that the time has come for him to commit suicide as promised.
The statement, “I will commit suicide” was reportedly made by the state governor on July 22, although he has vehemently denied it.
Fayose, a stanch critic of the Buhari-led administration was quoted to have said: “I will commit suicide if Buhari comes back alive,” his media aide however blamed the APC critics for propagating such lies against the state governor.
Lere Olayinka, Fayose’s Special Assistant on Public Communication and New Media, had in his reaction to the quote on the same day it emerged stated, “Kindly disregard this statement, as it did not emanate from Governor Fayose.
“It is their usual way of shifting the people’s attention from the real question Nigerians are asking, as to the whereabouts of the President. At no time was such statement made by the governor.”
