Mohammed Fawehinmi, the son of late legal luminary, Gani Fawehinmi (SAN), has condemned the Federal Government for withdrawing from the alleged N25 billion fraud case against Sen. Danjuma Goje.
Fawehinmi said that the decision to withdraw from the almost eight-year case was politically-motivated.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had been handling the case until June 7, when it handed the case file to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).
The handing over occurred barely two days after Goje announced he was stepping down from vying for the Senate Presidency, paving the way for the emergence of the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s choice, Sen. Ahmed Lawan.
Reacting, Fawehinmi said that the handling of the case could send a wrong message about the President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption fight.

“It was obvious that the case was dropped for political reasons,” Fawehinmi told New Telegraph.
“There was horse trading at the highest level. The man that both the president and his party approved as the Senate President finally got to the position after the election was conducted and he was sworn-in.
“However, it is worthy to note that there are so many other issues that touche on corruption which also seemed to have been swept under the carpet. One of such is the issue of Maina upon which nothing serious have been done till date.
“So, all I can say regarding the issue of Goje is that there are lots of horse trading and politics in play. It is then left for Nigerians to agitate and insist on the prosecution of people like Goje.
“This is because if people like Goje are allowed to get away just like that, then, government is encouraging more corruption.”
