An 11-year-old is set to marry her cousin who is 12, after his father gave the engagement his blessing. The family and friends were celebrating Nasser Hassan’s eldest son’s wedding when the father decided to increase the celebration dose by announcing the engagagement.
The law in Egypt does not allow marriages for anyone under the age of 18 and the engagement of the teenagers has sparked outrage among activists.
The father, who made a statement to Egypt’s Al Watan newspaper, said there was “nothing inappropriate” about the couple, adding that it was not “a marriage, only an engagement.”
