Daniel Ortega, the 70-year-old Nicaraguan President has on Tuesday announced his wife, Rosario Murillo as his running mate.
Ortega who had previously served two terms announced his wife as the vice presidential candidate ahead of the elections scheduled to hold in November.
The former guerrilla leader made the announcement of what he described as a ‘joint government’ during the registration of his candidacy for re-election.
He described his move as one which showed equality between genders.
Mr Ortega said: “We don’t doubt that (the vice presidential candidate) had to be a woman, and who better than the partner who has already been tested with work and proved to be very efficient and disciplined?”
