A former Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mr Abubakar Mohammed, has assumed duty as the new Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in-charge of Zone 5, Benin.
The Police Zone 5 comprises three states: Bayelsa, Delta and Edo.
This is contained in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer in Enugu State, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, on Wednesday.
Amaraizu said Abubakar’s assumption of duty followed his elevation to the rank of AIG and his successful completion of course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, near Jos.
He said that the new AIG would bring his wealth of experience in crime fighting and good police-community relations to bear in the zone.
“Abubakar received the Security Watch Africa Award in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), as the most outstanding community policing command/commissioner of police,’’ he said.
The police spokesman said that Abubakar had served the police in various capacities such as deputy Commissioner of Police in Ekiti and Kaduna States as well as Director of Nigeria Police Peace Keeping Directorate.
“Also, he served at the Interpol Headquarters, Lyon in France as a specialised officer in Economic and Financial Crime Directorate.
“He was the first black African to become an Assistant Director in the Interpol, and currently, he is the vice president of the Interpol representing Africa at the Interpol headquarters,’’ he said.(NAN)
