Following the continuous public execution of Nigerian offenders in Saudi Arabia, the Nigerian Government has expressed its distaste for the manner in which Saudi’s government carries out its punishment on foreigners in the country.
Recently, a Nigerian woman, one Yemeni, and two Pakistani nationals were executed after they were tried and found guilty of drug smuggling offenses.
The latest execution took the tally for this year only to 53; a number many find to be alarming.
While addressing newsmen on Tuesday, the Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, stated that the last Nigerian made it a total of eight Nigerians this year as well.
She further stressed that other 20 Nigerians are due to be executed, while another 12 are facing jail terms.
Abike explained, “So we have had cases where truly they didn’t commit the offense. We have appealed to the Saudi authorities to make the trials fair, open and ensure that justice is done.
“Even if you are going to die, you will know that you die for an offense you committed. We appeal to Nigerians going to Saudi Arabia to obey the laws of the land. Even kola nut is treated as a drug. We will continue to appeal to the Saudi authorities to treat some of the cases with some form of leniency.”
