A 2-1 win against fierce rivals, Rangers, their first since 2007 helped six-time Glo Premier League Champions, Enyimba keep in competition with Sunshine Stars at the top rung of the log yesterday.
Sunshine Stars claimed the honour of mid- season leaders courtesy of a hard-fought 2-1 home win against basement side, Taraba United, but the Peoples Elephants will go into the break with a more sense of accomplishment after securing a well-deserved victory against their Oriental rivals, Rangers.
Both sides cancelled each other out in the first half and it was no surprise the opening goal of the game came via a penalty.
Ranger’s Kalu Orji was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area by the centre referee in the 52 minute and Christain Obiozor calmly slotted the ball home for his sixth goal of the campaign.
The hosts however equalized through Godwin Aguda in the 78th minute via a penalty kick.
It was a tense affair afterwards as they both battled to score the decisive winning goal, and it was Andrew Abalogu who nodded home Ezekiel Bassey cross in the 82nd minute to give Enyimba a famous win against their Oriental neighbours.
