When retired English teacher Yvonne Mason, 61, got a letter in the mail from the White House, she got out her marker and started making corrections.
In the top left corner, she wrote: “Have y’all tried grammar & style check?”
She also commented, “Federal is capitalized only when used as part of a proper noun.”
She made the corrections, took a photo and posted it on Facebook and also mailed the letter back to the White House.
“It was a poorly worded missive,” she said. “Poor writing is not something I abide. If someone is capable of doing better, then they should do better.”
Ms. Mason from Atlanta had written to President Trump urging him to visit the families of the teens and others killed in the Florida Parkland shooting which occurred in February
“I had written to them in anger, to tell you the truth,” she said. “I thought he owed it to these grieving families.”
She was also quite miffed that the letter did not address her concerns but rather rattled on about actions taken after the shooting.
She also had other criticisms of the letter like a section which talked about a “rule” banning devices that turn legal guns into illegal machine guns” which she said was unclear.
She said there were more errors; “I did not mention the dangling modifier,” she said. “I focused mainly on mechanics.”
She also said the latter paled in comparison to some of the ones she had received from other Senators like Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, whom she said sent “beautiful” letters that struck a tone that “makes me more important than him,” she said.
