An end to the current tomato scarcity which has hit the country hard is in sight as the National Research Institute for Chemical Technology, Zaria, Kaduna State on Thursday announced a newly developed vaccine against the Tomato pest.
Recall that the Agriculture minister, Audu Ogbeh had a few weeks ago associated the scarcity of tomato in the country to a newly and rapidly multiplying pest, Tuta Absoluta.
According to the Institute’s Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Bala Aliyu, the institute is confident that an end has come to the pest which struck several farms especially in six Northern states including Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Plateau, Lagos and Kaduna.
Aliyu said: “This vaccine has been found to be very effective after undergoing various scientific testing,”
He further added: “We will work with the state and federal government agencies to carry diffuse this important development to our teeming farmers in the country and beyond.”
