Emefiele: We’ll approach Court of Appeal to quash N100m fine

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has promised to appeal a court judgement awarding N100 million in favour of former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele over his detention.

The anti-graft commission disclosed this in a statement shared on its Facebook page.

Justice Olukayode Adeniyi of the FCT High Court in Abuja awarded the compensation to the embattled former CBN governor after ruling that his prolonged detention without trial was a flagrant violation of his fundamental rights.

Ruling on the fundamental human rights suit filed by the former CBN governor, the court also restrained the FG and its agents from rearresting or detaining Emefiele without an order of court, following his prolonged detention in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

In its reaction, the EFCC expressed dissatisfaction with the judgement.

The EFCC statement read in part, “Justice O.A Adeniyi, on Monday, January 8, 2024 fined the Commission after he ruled that the Commission’s detention of Emefiele in the course of his investigation was a violation of his right to liberty.

“The decision failed to take cognisance of the fact that the former CBN boss was held with a valid order of court.

“Consequently, the Commission will approach the Court of Appeal to set it aside.”
