Yusuf Buba, Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs has vowed that Ghana must face consequences over the demolition of Nigerian embassy in the country.
The Herald yesterday reported that the building that housed staff of the Nigerian embassy in Ghana was demolished by a bulldozer on Sunday June 22, 2020. The incident has attracted several backlash from prominent persons in Nigeria.
Although Ghana tendered an apology to the Nigerian government and said the demolition was carried out by unknown persons. Reps have vowed that the neighbouring country must face the consequences of the act.
This was contained in a signed statement by Yusuf Buba who described the demolition as “a gross violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1949 and, therefore, must be sanctioned”
Buba said an eyewitness reported that a bulldozer which arrived late at the diplomatic premises, broke through the gate of the compound before destroying the nearly completed four units of four bedroom block of flats.
According to the eyewitness, all efforts to report the incident to the Ghana Police and foreign Affairs ministry did not yield positive results.
Buba said “no reprieve, we were told, came the way of the Nigerian diplomats. We further learnt that, even when the Police finally arrived at the scene, they could not do anything”.
Noting that, Nigeria possessed all necessary legal titles and certifications, including site plan, payment receipts and allocation papers from the Ghanaian authorities, Yusuf Buba stated the Nigeria-Ghana relationship would be reviewed, re-appraised and re-examined, Daily Post reports
“We shall deploy all legislative means, including exploring and invoking all necessary rules, regulations and instruments that guide our common membership in other parliaments, to compel Ghana to answer for this act of gross violation”
