Elon Musk may be the richest person in the world at the moment but there was a time in his life when he got replacement parts for his car from a junkyard.
The Tesla chief executive disclosed this in a tweet on Monday after a photo emerged of him repairing his car himself as he could not afford to have the car checked by a mechanic.
In the May 12, 1995 photo which has since gone viral on Twitter, Elon Musk, who is now worth $209 billion, could be seen smiling in a polo shirt and shorts while kneeling beside the car.
Although the model of the old car was not clearly visible from the angle from which the photo was taken, the Pretoria, South Africa-born techpreneur’s demeanour showed he was proud of his automobile.
A Twitter user, Pranay Pathole, shared the photo which has been liked over 25,500 times and retweeted nearly 2,000 times.
Tagging the billionaire Pathole wrote, “@elonmusk in 1995, fixing his car by himself as he couldn’t afford to pay for repairs.”

Elon Musk replied the tweet, confirming Pathole’s assertion that he could not afford to have the car checked by a mechanic at the time.
He added, “I bought the replacement glass from a junkyard for $20. They’re great places to get spare parts.”
