Electoral offence: Police to prosecute Kano commissioner, LG chairman

The Police  has confirmed the arrest of Kano State Commissioner for Local Government, Murtala Garo and the Chairman Nasarawa Local Government, Lamin Sani, over alleged electoral offences.

The duo were arrested over alleged attempt to destroy election result sheets for the just concluded governorship and assembly elections.

Spokesman of the police command in the state, DSP Abdullahi Haruna, said in a statement issued to newsmen in Kano on Monday that the two would be prosecuted after investigation.

The statement explained that the suspects were arrested  at about 1 am at Nassarawa Local Government Collation Centre in Kano.

“The suspects are alleged to have penetrated the collation centre and attempted to destroy election result sheets,” it added.

According to the statement, security operatives had to rescue the Deputy Governor of the state Dr Nasiru Gawuna from the scene.

“The police have commenced investigations into the matter and the command is assuring members of the public that whoever is involved will be investigated and charged to court.”

The police appealed to members of the public to remain calm as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would soon announce the final results of the elections held on Saturday in the state.(NAN)
