Elderly man caught lying over amount extorted by rogue policeman – Lagos police spokesman

An elderly man extorted by a rogue policeman inflated the sum collected by 150 percent.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Lagos, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated this in a series of tweets on Thursday.

Hundeyin said that the incident occurred on Wednesday when the elderly man, who he did not name, stormed his office to report a case of extortion.

The police spokesman said that the elderly man complained that he was extorted of N50,000 by a policeman.

He said that when the policeman was called to defend himself, he admitted to extorting the man but said he only collected N20,000.

According to Hundeyin, the elderly man later admitted that the policeman only collected N20,000 and not the N50,000 he earlier claimed.

The police spokesman said that the rogue policeman was compelled to make a refund to the elderly man before being subjected to disciplinary action.

“Yesterday, an elderly man came to my office and complained bitterly of how a police officer extorted him of N50,000 before he could take his son on bail.

“After I summoned the police officer to my office, the elderly man narrated the same story in his presence.

“The officer vehemently denied ‘collecting N50,000 from this man.’ He did not deny collecting money; the exact figure is the issue now.

“Then the elderly man said, ‘Actually, it was N20,000 and not N50,000.’ This still does not excuse the corrupt practice. Even one Naira is bad enough.

“The officer was first made to refund the elderly man, after which his disciplinary journey began. Papa then came to me and apologized saying, ‘I said N50,000 because I was angry.’”
