The Nigeria Police Council (NPC) has officially confirmed Kayode Egbetokun as the substantive Inspector General of Police (IGP), The Herald reports.
The announcement came after a council meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State revealed this confirmation to the press following the meeting.
The governor also mentioned that President Tinubu, who chaired the council meeting, played a role in addressing the unfolding political and security situation in Rivers State, where there had been a reported attempt to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
This confirmation came after President Tinubu, on June 19, 2023, appointed Kayode Egbetokun as the IGP.
Egbetokun took over the role from Usman Baba, who was appointed as the IGP by former President Muhammadu Buhari on April 6, 2021.
Egbetokun Biography
Kayode Egbetokun, born on September 4, 1964, hails from the Egbado South Local Government Area of Ogun State. His career in the Nigeria Police Force began when he enlisted as a Cadet ASP (Course 16) on March 3, 1990. As per police regulations, he will reach 35 years in service by September 2024.
Egbetokun has an educational background rooted in mathematics. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Lagos, Akoka, in June 1987.
Following his graduation, he briefly lectured in Mathematics at Yaba College of Technology. His academic achievements include a master’s degree in Engineering Analysis from the University of Lagos in 1996, a postgraduate diploma in Petroleum Economics from Delta State University in 2000, and an MBA from Lagos State University, Ojo, in 2004.
He also holds a PhD in Peace and Security Studies from Al-hikmah University in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Throughout his career, Egbetokun has held various key positions, including Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos, Squadron Commander of the Mobile Police Force (MOPOL), head of the Anti-Fraud Unit at the FCT Command in Abuja, and Chief Superintendent of Police in Administration at the Lagos State Command headquarters in Ikeja.
Additionally, he has served as an Area Commander in Osogbo, Osun State Command, and an Area Commander in Gusau, Zamfara State Command, among other roles.
