EFCC To Re-prosecute Corruption Cases Of Saraki, Odili, 13 Other Former Governors

2 Min Read
EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will be re-opening corruption cases against the Senate President , Bukola Saraki and 14 of his former colleagues in a bid to prosecute them to a logical conclusion.

Saraki, who is the former Governor of Kwara State is also facing a Code of Conduct Tribunal matter currently.

According to a Leadership News report, some of the former governors to be re-investigated by the EFCC are Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia), Chimaroke Nnamani (Enugu), Saminu Turaki (Jigawa), Sule Lamido (Jigawa), and Joshua Dariye (Plateau), Ahmed Yerima (Zamfara), Gabriel Suswam (Benue), James Ibori (Delta), Martin Elechi (Ebonyi), Danjuma Goje (Gombe), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), Ikedi Ohakim (Imo) and Peter Odili (Rivers).

According to our checks, some of the governors listed are already ongoing some sort of corruption probe, however it appears there is either judicial encumberances or lack of diligent prosecution stalling most of the cases.

For instance, former Governor Peter Odili was granted a perpetual injunction prohibiting the EFCC from probing him over N100 billion alleged embezzlement.

Other governors like Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, former Bauchi governor who is accused of N19.8 billion mismanagement has been pending with the EFCC since 2007.

Also, the EFCC accused the former governor of Abia State, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu, of diverting the state’s N5.6 billion while in office between 1999 and 2007. He was arraigned in July 2007 on a 107-count charge of money laundering, official corruption and criminal diversion of public funds. His case is one of the cases that have gone as far as to the Supreme Court and is now back to the high court for trial, Leadership reports.
