Former Director-General of Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, Dr. Doyin Okupe, has confirmed his release by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Lagos.
He made the disclosure in a tweet.
Okupe added that the Department of State Services (DSS), which arrested him on the instance of the EFCC, “apologised for the error”.
The Herald had reported that the DSS confirmed arresting Okupe at the Muritala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA), Lagos earlier today following a request by the EFCC.
His lawyer, Tunde Babaleye, Esq. said that the DSS asked his client to provide court processes where he paid the fine imposed on him by the Federal High Court, Abuja in a money laundering conviction on December 19, 2022.
Speaking in a tweet after his release by EFCC, the Ogun State-born medical doctor turned politician described the incident as an “occupational hazard”.
See tweet:
I was arrested & detained @ the MMIA, Lagos this morning, 12th Jan on my way to UK for medicals; years after my passport had been withheld by the FHC Abuja.
I just left the EFCC office where Snr Officers in Lagos & Abuja appologised to me for the error.
