Two educationists have advocated the reintroduction of corporal punishment in schools in order to instill discipline.
They made the call in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday.
Mrs Gladys Grimmes, the proprietor of Gladys and Grimmes Educational Services, said that discipline should be integrated into education for the desired quality to be achieved.
Grimmes said that corporal punishment was “a corrective measure that instills discipline in students which is a major part of our culture in training students’’.
She noted that the result of an undisciplined person could be disastrous and that as such, children should be oriented on the importance of discipline.
“From day one, when a child enters school, you let them know teachers are in control and if they should harass the teachers, it will lead them to rustication.
“Besides we teach them morals and let them know the consequences of their action if they should break the rules,’’ Grimmes said.
She said that any student who violets the rules and regulations and harass any teacher should be expelled to serve as an example to other students.
Also, Mrs Dorcas Olubodun, the Principal of the school, said that any student who failed to adhere to the rules and regulations of the school to the extent of harassing teachers should be expelled.
Olubodun said that education without good moral would yield no dividend and as such “it is important to instil discipline and introduce punishment where necessary.
According to her, the moment students gain admission, orientation exercise is usually organised for the students to educate them on the rules and regulation of the school.
“We let them know that harassment of teacher or signs of indiscipline, after several warning, erring student will be expelled.
“An SS2 student was recently expelled because he pushed a teacher who tried correcting him,’’ the principal said.
