1 Min Read

Mrs Yemisi Oyewole, a Lagos based Educationist, on Saturday called for regular sports competitions in schools to improve the physical and mental health of the students.

Oyewole made the call at the 5th Bi-ennial Inter House Sports Competition of the Child’s Will Group of Schools in Lagos.

She said that regular physical activity provided health benefits such as the prevention high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, cancers and other non-communicable diseases.

“Inactivity has contributed a lot to the burden of diseases in the country and it is important to start engaging these young ones through physical activities that will keep them active.

“Therefore, sporting activities must be a core requirement in all schools and a central component in a comprehensive school’s health programme to provide foundation for physical activities in their lifetime,” she said.

Oyewole urged stakeholders in the education sector to support government’s efforts toward reviving and improving the standard of education in the country.

She also urged students to take their education and entrepreneurial studies serious to equip them academically, technically and professionally in their chosen career.

According to the educationalist, it is also an avenue to solving unemployment issues on the part of the government.(NAN)
