Manchester United Striker, Edison Cavani, has been issued a misconduct charge by the English Football Association, on Thursday.

The charge borders on an offensive Spanish quote, “negrito”, the former P.S.G star made on social media, Instagram, after Man Utd’s 3-2 come from behind win against Southampton, last month (November 29).

“Edinson Cavani has been charged with misconduct for a breach of FA Rule E3, in relation to a social media post on Thursday 29 November 2020.

“It is alleged that, contrary to FA Rule E3.1, a comment posted on the Manchester United FC player’s Instagram page was insulting and/or abusive and/or improper and/or brought the game into disrepute.

“It is further alleged that the comment constitutes an ‘Aggravated Breach’, which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference, whether express or implied, to colour and/or race and/or ethnic origin,” an FA statement read.

Cavani claimed that the quote, “negrito”, which translates to “small black person”, in English, was meant to thank his friend who sent him congratulatory messages after he had helped the Manchester club secure the win by contributing 2 goals.

Manchester United backed their veteran forward, stating that the quote was a lighthearted remark and had a different complexion over in South America.

The forward deleted the post afterwards following the public outcry in the wake of anti-racism campaigns all over the globe.

“Edinson and the club were clear that there was absolutely no malicious intent behind the message, which he deleted and apologized for, as soon as he was informed that it could have been misconstrued,” Man Utd stated in a statement.

The club and player have announced that they will take time to contemplate their next line of action after the F.A charge.

“The player and the club will now consider the charge and respond to the FA accordingly,” the club said.

Under the new rules implemented by the F.A this season, as regards offences of discrimination, the striker could face suspension for 3 or more matches if found guilty.
