A popular club in Ebonyi State has been shut by the State Government for engaging in “illegal” activities.
The club, Brifina Gardens, located around Waterworks Road, Abakaliki, was shut over the weekend on allegations of engaging in sodomy, pornography, prostitution and consumption of prohibited substances.
Leading the team that sealed off the club, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Ali Odefa, said the club constituted a security risk to the area and the state.
He said that the manager of the club and other clubs in the area were invited for a meeting on the menace posed by their activities, but the Brifina manager failed to show up.
He averred that criminal elements had been apprehended on the premises on several occasions.
In her reaction, the manager of the club, Chineye Okorie admitted not showing up for the security meeting with the SSA on Security, but stated that she directed the government to formally write the company before she could take any action about the government’s claim.
She affirmed her right to carry out her business without molestation from government or any other quarters, stating that: “This is Nigeria and anybody can go for any employment so long as you are earning money and you don’t steal or prostitute”.
On the allegation that she engaged strippers, Okorie said that everyone that worked under her was well paid, with some of them getting as much as 25,000 a week, a claim that was corroborated by one of the girls arrested on the premises on allegation of strip dancing.
