The Student Christian Movement of Nigeria (SCM) has called for positive actions to preserve the earth as it observes the 2020 World Earth’s Day virtually.

The group made the call on Wednesday in a statement issued in Ibadan by Mr Dare Ajongbo, the Executive Secretary of the group.
It encouraged members of SCM and the public to post pictures on social media with ash tags to inspire people and create awareness of the day.
“The negative impact of human activity on the climate and the environment has increased tremendously.
“This has led to many environmental hazards, crises, diseases and conflicts.
“Climate and environmental pollution are now alarming and becoming uncontrollable.
“It is therefore our call to respond to eco-injustices and to make conscious efforts to preserve the earth.
“SCM this year is actualising part of the objectives of her strategic plan, which has to do with enlightenment and advocacy to her members and the general public about social issues.
“The Earth’s Day is a global environmental movement marked on the 22nd of April every year.
” We celebrate the Earth Day by appreciating and respecting the natural world,” he said.
“With social distancing in place for many of us due to lockdown occasioned by COVID-19, the Earth’s Day has gone digital.
“Virtual events like environmental lectures and films will take place instead.
“Off course, social distancing does not mean that you cannot go outside and enjoy nature if you do so responsibly in states where there are no restrictions.
“Earth’s Day events range from river and drainage cleanups to invasive removals, environmental cleanups and creating awareness about single-use plastic, air pollution such as smoke and burning of fossil fuels at high temperature among others,” he added.
